<br />The same <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">magneto rheological damping </font>technology that allows <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/19/autoblog-first-drive-2009-corvette-zr1/">Chevrolet</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/03/review-2009-cadillac-cts-v-supercar-performance-everyday-driv/">Cadillac</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ferrari599">Ferrari</a> to control 500-plus horsepower in a car that's comfortable to drive on city streets will soon make its way to the engine bay of the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3. In this latest application, Delphi's engineers have made it possible to fine-tune the way engine mounts react to the various situations presented when driving a car.<br /><br />For instance, these MagneRide engine mounts can automatically adjust their stiffness when the engine is initially started or when the transmission is shifted into Drive or Park. In the case of the 911 GT3, <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Porsche expects these engine mounts to improve traction and stability during hard acceleration and cornering.<br /><br />Future applications are likely to include luxury automobiles with stop/start or full hybrid powertrains, as well as performance cars whose engine mounts can be tied to the other various active systems, perhaps stiffening when a vehicle is put into a sport mode. Hit the jump for the official press release.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/delphi-magneride-engine-mounts/">Delphi Magneride Engine Mounts</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/delphi-magneride-engine-mounts/2137353/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/magneride_shocks_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/delphi-magneride-engine-mounts/2137354/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/magneride_shocks_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Delphi]</font><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/11/delphi-develops-magneride-engine-mounts-for-porsche-911-gt3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Delphi develops MagneRide engine mounts for Porsche 911 GT3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/11/delphi-develops-magneride-engine-mounts-for-porsche-911-gt3/">Delphi develops MagneRide engine mounts for Porsche 911 GT3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sat, 11 Jul 2009 15:28:00 EST. <br />Green-minded fans of the upcoming SLS supercar that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/02/gullwing-returns-official-details-on-mercedes-benz-slc-amg/">Mercedes-Benz AMG</a> has been working on for well over two years, rejoice. The rumormill is buzzing with word that an all-electric version of the gullwinged monster could enter limited production in 2015. That's a ways off, but considering the gestation period of the gas-chugging version, it's pretty much par for the course. <br /><br />According to the gossip-happy blokes over at <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/241425/">Autocar</a>, the electric SLS will share its lightweight aluminum body, gullwing doors, and most of the interior with upcoming SLS. The changes for the SLS eDrive will mostly be contained in the powertrain, which will use four 98 kW motors (one at each wheel) for a total of 392 kW (532bhp) and 649 lb. ft. of torque. A rumored 0-62 mph time of under four seconds and a top speed of 120 mph would put it in the realm of the Tesla Roadster if the SLS eDrive were available today, albeit undoubtedly at a much higher price point. <br /><br />Of course, nobody actually knows what the electric gullwing will be capable of - if indeed it reaches production at all. According to <em>Autocar</em>, the SLS eDrive figures to have a shorter range than the Tesla, somewhere between 93 and 112 miles from a full charge that takes eight hours from a standard outlet, or five to six from a more powerful outlet. <br /><br />The gasoline-powered SLS is expected to debut at this year's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Frankfurt-Motor-Show/">Frankfurt Motor Show</a>. <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-mercedes-benz-amg-sls/">Spy Shots: Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-mercedes-benz-amg-sls/1514061/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/01-4-09-merc-sls-kgp_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-mercedes-benz-amg-sls/1514062/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/02-4-09-merc-sls-kgp_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-mercedes-benz-amg-sls/1514063/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/03-4-09-merc-sls-kgp_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-mercedes-benz-amg-sls/1514064/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/04-4-09-merc-sls-kgp_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/spy-shots-mercedes-benz-amg-sls/1514065/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/05-4-09-merc-sls-kgp_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/241425/">Autocar</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/10/rumormill-mercedes-benz-working-on-electric-sls-edrive-for-2015/">Rumormill: Mercedes-Benz working on electric SLS eDrive for 2015</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 10 Jul 2009 11:26:00 EST. Above a certain speed, any linear force interacting with the surface causes the force to skip over the surface like a rock skipping over the water. The ripples are caused by the force alternately being "thrown off the surface" and then touching down again.<br /><br />The issue isn't about oscillating car wheels, nor wheels at all for that matter. The scientists performed their experiments with a flat, inclined un-suspended plow blade; when it got above a certain speed the plow blade created ripples just like a wheel does.<br /><br />The bad news is that it will be long time before the phenomenon can be stopped: "Just about any time a malleable surface is acted upon by a sideways force, you will get ripples." Since it doesn't look like ripples are going away, scientists could turn their attention to suspension systems that will "eliminate the bumpy ride." <em>Hat tip to Michael S</em><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/07/090707131834.htm">Science Daily</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/why-does-a-road-ripple-like-a-washboard-here-comes-the-science/">Why does a road ripple like a washboard? One undoubtedly unhappy owner of a 2007 Saab 9-3 Combi in Sweden apparently found out first hand that leaving your iPod on your front seat is a bad idea, as investigators believe the musical bauble is the reason the wagon caught fire, turning its interior into a prop for <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101393/"><em>Backdraft II</em></a>. <br /><br />There has been no definitive word that the iPod was the cause for the fire, and we don't know at this point whether the popular music player was charging at the time of the incident. We do know, though that there were apparently no underlying problems with the vehicle, and the fire started on the seats, where the iPod was resting. <br /><br />Since iPods are still a very hot item (no pun intended), we're guessing that you shouldn't leave them sitting inside the car. Now that there is a chance the little battery-powered devices can <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/09/apple-recalls-faulty-first-generation-ipod-nano-players-in-korea/">spontaneously combust</a>, we're not so sure they should be in your pocket, either. <em>Hat tip to 13enS</em>!<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://74.125.95.132/translate_c?hl=sv&amp;sl=sv&amp;tl=en&amp;u=http://hallandsposten.se/nyheter/halmstad/1.518158%3FarticleRenderMode%3Dimage%26image%3D0&amp;prev=hp&amp;rurl=translate.google.com&amp;usg=ALkJrhhRB-XuysyON2PHx3xAZFme5QJpCw">Hallandsposten</a> via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/09/ipod-suspected-of-setting-saab-ablaze/"> Engadget</a> | Image: Christer Pioge]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/apple-ipod-suspected-of-torching-defenseless-saab-9-3/">Fiery Swede: Apple iPod suspected of torching defenseless Saab 9-3 Combi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 17:28:00 EST. Faster processors and increased memory will enable the LCD to oscillate between two images fast enough to give the illusion of depth. The incorporation of important landmarks embedded within the 3D image ought to go leaps and bounds towards finding your destination easier.<br /><br />In the near term, it's likely that the functionality will first be available in aftermarket systems, with OEM models becoming available after the tech becomes a bit more mainstream. Actually, Clarion has been selling a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/06/clarion-releases-new-3d-portable-navigation-system-for-the-uk/">3D nav system</a> in the UK for over a year and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/04/09/just-like-sony-panasonic-3d-car-navigation-system/">Sony and Panasonic</a> have had the tech available in Japan, so it's more a matter of when, not if, the tech will be available in North America.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/238201/satnav_screens_go_3d.html">Auto Express</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/in-car-navigation-systems-set-to-go-3d/">In-car navigation systems set to go 3D?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 16:30:00 EST. <br /> For a long time, worrying about Jaguar was the only sensible thing to do. While it was never exactly clear if the marque had (ever) achieved profitability, we enthusiasts were only too happy to give them the benefit of the doubt. After all, the English automaker serially gifted us with watershed designs. Sublime mechanical creatures like the E- and D-Type sports cars, as well as the curvacious Mark II and original XJ. How could we not be totally and utterly smitten? Yet somehow, the once proud automaker eventually found itself adrift in mediocrity, turning out maligned and slow-selling products with an unpleasant odor of unreliability as the money began to run dry. When the then Ford-owned brand launched headlong into its "democratization of luxury" strategy that resulted in the lamentable 2001 X-Type and serious talk of an SUV, well, we couldn't help but grow gravely concerned. <br /> <br /> After all, how could a company like Jaguar - a firm that prided itself not only on voluptuous design and sporty handling but also sybaritic appointments and a refined, aristocratic manor speak with a straight face about "the democratization of luxury?"
<div style="border: 0px dotted black; margin: 5px; padding: 2px 3px; color: rgb(153, 0, 0); line-height: 120%; font-size: 1.5em; float: right; width: 235px; text-align: center;"> <strong>Not only does the XJ appear to be the measure of its German competitors, it may play a strong foil for the </strong><strong>Maserati </strong><strong>Quattroporte and Porsche Panamera.</strong> </div>
The very concept was oxymoronic to the point of absurdity: when a given commodity is within easy reach of the masses, it ceases to be a luxury good. Simple as that. Predictably, it didn't take long for consumers to cotton on to this revelation, and the savior X-Type was broadly lambasted and narrowly purchased.<br /> <br /> Thankfully, the lanky Leaping Cat is at last in proud form once again, and under the new leadership of India's Tata Motors, they are building on the success of the massively impressive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/05/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-jaguar-xf-supercharged/">Jaguar XF</a> of 2008. By our reckoning, that car was the first clear indication from chief designer Ian Callum and Company that not only did Jaguar understand that it had a past - it might have the blueprint for a bright future as well. As it reasserts its claim to the flagship slot in Coventry's lineup, the new XJ finds itself with big shoes to fill. Is it up to the task? Follow the jump to learn more.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="%GalleryURL%">2010 Jaguar XJ</a></strong></p><a href="/gallery/2010-jaguar-xj-4/2135326/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/jag-xj_launch_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="/gallery/2010-jaguar-xj-4/2135329/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/jaguar-xj_launch_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="/gallery/2010-jaguar-xj-4/2135327/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/jag-xj_launch_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="/gallery/2010-jaguar-xj-4/2135325/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/jag-xj_launch_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="/gallery/2010-jaguar-xj-4/2134421/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2010jaguarxj_abh004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/2010-jaguar-xj-we-get-hands-on-with-coventrys-new-big-cat/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>2010 Jaguar XJ: We get hands-on with Coventry's new big cat</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/2010-jaguar-xj-we-get-hands-on-with-coventrys-new-big-cat/">2010 Jaguar XJ: We get hands-on with Coventry's new big cat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 15:15:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>2011 Chevrolet Volt - Click above for high-res gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />We don't have to tell you how important the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/tag/chevy+volt/">Chevrolet Volt</a> is to General Motors. Even if the model isn't likely to turn a profit for many years, the plug-in electric car's success or failure is likely to be seen as a crucial indicator of GM's post-bankruptcy prospects in the eyes of many. This being the case, it's not surprising that automaker is practically throwing everything it's got at the project. According to Chief Engineer Andrew Farah, the Volt team is currently working on getting the sound and feel of the driving experience just right. Speaking to <em>Automotive News</em>, Farah said:<br /><blockquote><em>The engine, not being directly connected to the foot, is one of the things we continue to tune. We don't want it to be discomforting to people. There is an expectation of what happens when you put your accelerator to the floor in the way the car sounds and feels. We've got the feel. We've got the feel of a sports car. The sound part and the way the engine plays into that perception is one of the areas we have to work on</em>.<br /></blockquote>Clearly, creating a plug-in car with mass-market appeal isn't as simple as bolting an electric motor and a bunch of batteries into an existing chassis. People have come to expect certain things to happen as an automobile is driven, and GM needs to find the right compromise between zero-emissions technology and time-honored driving dynamics. Further complicating the issue is the tremendous weight of the car's T-shaped battery pack. Farah explains:<br /><blockquote><em>Here's the thing to remember: When you put the battery in, it actually lowers the center of gravity of the car. There are a thousand reasons why heavy is bad, but a few why it is good. And so we are getting those advantages of the good heavy, and the disadvantages we are managing</em>.<br /></blockquote><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2011-chevy-volt-3/">2011 Chevy Volt</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2011-chevy-volt-3/1362194/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/02/volt-new-official-pics01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2011-chevy-volt-3/1362203/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/02/volt-new-official-pics12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2011-chevy-volt-3/1362196/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/02/volt-new-official-pics04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2011-chevy-volt-3/1362197/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/02/volt-new-official-pics05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2011-chevy-volt-3/1362198/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/02/volt-new-official-pics06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090706/ANA03/307069949&amp;AssignSessionID=173346537478507">Automotive News</a> - sub. req'd]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/07/what-a-car-feels-and-sounds-like-gm-refining-volt-driving-exper/">Tuning Chevrolet's Volt, GM engineer says: "We've got the feel of a sports car"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 16:29:00 EST. <br />Ever notice that you your bladder seems to shrink when its cold outside? Apparently, <a href="http://www.hybridcars.com/forums/2008-prius-fuel-tank-capacity.html">the Toyota Prius feels your pain</a>, and while we don't have any good solutions to report for your own personal problems, Toyota has found an easy fix for its hybrid. Unlike previous generations of Toyota's fuel saver, the new 2010 model won't have an underperforming bladder when it's cold outside.<br /><br />Since its introduction back in 2001, Toyota has equipped the Prius with a synthetic fuel tank bladder that collapsed as gasoline was slowly pumped out of the tank and into the engine. Due to complaints that the last-gen car wasn't able to take its full 11.9 gallon fuel allotment whenever the temperature was below 70-degrees, the third-generation Prius comes equipped with a more conventional rigid fuel tank made from lightweight resin. In order to retain its coveted low-emissions rating in California, the latest Prius also reportedly features an improved vapor-recovery system that will help reduce hydrocarbon emissions.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2010-toyota-prius-4/">2010 Toyota Prius</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2010-toyota-prius-4/1285199/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/01_2010_toyota_prius_abg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2010-toyota-prius-4/1285203/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/02_2010_toyota_prius_abg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2010-toyota-prius-4/1285222/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/03_2010_toyota_prius_abg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2010-toyota-prius-4/1285223/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/04_2010_toyota_prius_abg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/2010-toyota-prius-4/1285224/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/05_2010_toyota_prius_abg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-tc-biz-trans-priustank-0701-jul06,0,6502061.story">Chicago Tribune</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/06/report-2010-toyota-prius-ditches-incredible-shrinking-gas-tank/">REPORT: 2010 Toyota Prius ditches Incredible Shrinking Gas Tank for conventional unit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 06 Jul 2009 17:58:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><small style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Audi's TechDay Quality philosophy -- Click above to watch video</small><br /></div>
<br />Why are German luxury cars so expensive? Because of German engineering. And what is this whole "German engineering" thing all about? That's the question Audi tries to explain once a year when it takes outsiders through its quality processes during its factory TechDay. <br /><br />According to the Audi, the automaker's three main tenets are Value, Precision, and Fascination, and they all add up to Quality. This encompasses processes that go into making processes like reworking the fit of the gas tank cap to adjust for parallax error, using a scanning electron microscope for surface analysis, and an olfactory team to make sure things like leather smell right.<br /><br />The video shows you what Audi does to get you that quality... and frankly, it looks like a lot more fun than the engineering bits. You can see the video and read a Joycean-length string of press releases after the jump. According to <em>The Detroit News</em>, they might be. The Motown daily says that government officials are pondering whether or not they should require new vehicles to be fitted with lane-departure warning systems and automatic braking systems that trigger upon warning of an impending accident. Both systems are currently available only in very small percentage of new passenger cars - primarily luxury vehicles. According to the DetNews report, safety experts believe that the systems "show significant promise" in their ability to reduce traffic accident-related fatalities and injuries. <br /><br />NHTSA will decide whether to require such systems in 2011 after further cost-benefit analysis, including looking at insurance company data and estimated manufacturing costs. It has already added new components to its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) for 2011 vehicles, including a test that measures the effectiveness of lane-departure warning systems and a different frontal-crash program.<br /><br />NHTSA hopes to announce its findings by the end of the year.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.detnews.com/article/20090702/AUTO01/907020346/1148/auto01/NHTSA+may+impose+more+safety+features">The Detroit News</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/03/report-nhtsa-to-mandate-lane-departure-warning-and-auto-brake-s/">REPORT: NHTSA to mandate lane departure warning and auto-brake systems?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 03 Jul 2009 13:44:00 EST. Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan have put the kibosh on rolling out more oil burners due to cost and perception issues. <br /><br />Toyota's obviously on a hybrid run and doesn't want to expel the effort or expense of investing in diesel for the American market -- and having to overcome America's dirty diesel perceptions. The others, as mass market manufacturers, simply need more justification for the cost and complexity of oilburners in order to make the case for consumers to spend more.<br /><br />Additionally, diesel's benefits are weighted differently according to EPA or CAFE standards. The EPA mileage numbers present diesels well, but CAFE's differing fuel mileage equation makes gas-hybrids look better than diesels, and CAFE is something all automakers are looking at. However, you'll notice that German brands aren't mentioned -- their price premium and European diesel volumes make a worthwhile case for diesels, so those diesel Jetta Sportwagons won't be going away any time soon.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20090629/ANA06/306299972/1178">Automotive News</a> - Sub. <br />You shouldn't need Professor X-style telekinetic powers to move a wheelchair using only your mind, at least not according to Toyota. The World's Largest Automaker is busily developing its Brain Machine Interface, which uses thought-control and brain wave analysis technologies in an attempt the make life better for elderly or handicapped people.<br /><br />A series of electrodes are attached to the scalp and measure the brain activities associated with certain thoughts. The BMI then displays those signals on an attached screen and can create a set of instructions that may be useful in all kinds of scenarios, including to move an electric wheelchair.<br /><br />According to Toyota, the company's BMI technology has advanced to the point where it's practically instantaneous (the delay is just 125 milliseconds), is 95-percent accurate and will adapt itself to any user's thought patterns. Next logical question: How long until our cars come sans pedals and steering wheels? <em>Thanks for the tip, FaLeX</em>!<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/toyota-bmi-wheelchair/">Toyota BMI Wheelchair</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/toyota-bmi-wheelchair/2114222/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/88736030_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/toyota-bmi-wheelchair/2114221/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/88736036_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/toyota-bmi-wheelchair/2114220/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/88736050_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/toyota-bmi-wheelchair/2114219/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/88736054_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/toyota-bmi-wheelchair/2114218/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/88736058_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.dawn.com/wps/wcm/connect/dawn-content-library/dawn/news/sci-tech/09-toyota-develops-wheelchair-steered-by-thought-szh--01">Dawn.com</a> | Photo by YOSHIKAZU TSUNO/AFP/Getty]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/29/brain-power-toyota-develops-thought-controlled-wheelchair/">Brain Power: Toyota develops thought-controlled wheelchair</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 29 Jun 2009 16:28:00 EST. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/25/pioneer-using-wimax-to-send-content-to-your-car/"> <br /></a>With so many infotainment devices being created, we're beginning to wonder what people are actually doing in their cars -- or rather, if they ever get out of their cars. Pioneer has thrown another electronic log onto the in-car streaming entertainment fire with its prototype network A/V playback system that uses WiMax. That means that any media you keep digitally stored at home could conceivably be streamed to your car. <br /><br />We say conceivably because it will be a while before cities have enough WiMax coverage to make it all work. But when they do, your TiVo can go along for the ride. Because the device is mobile, you could also use it to watch something in another area of your house, or while relaxing in your backyard. <br />The U.S. Department of Energy has finally announced the first recipient of low interest loans under its Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Incentive Program. The first recipient is Ford, and analysts believe the DoE will award sums to Nissan and Tesla Motors, as well. Ford applied for up to $11 billion in loans, but instead it was awarded $5.9 billion in financing. The Dearborn-based automaker will use the money to fund its electric vehicle program that will launch a battery-powered version of the Transit Connect in 2010, and it will also likely use the capital to help pay for the $550 million renovation of its Wayne, MI sport-utility plant to build the next-generation Focus in both internal combustion and electric flavors.<br /><br />For its part, Nissan wants to add production of its upcoming electric car and lithium ion batteries at its assembly complex in Smyrna, Tennessee, and it will receive $1.6 billion. <br /><br />Despite receiving the smallest sum of the three automakers, Tesla is arguably the biggest winner this round, as the $465 million it may receive will allow the fledgeling EV maker to proceed with completing development and production of its <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/tag/ModelS/">Model S</a> sedan. Recent investment in the company by Daimler was probably a big help in getting the loan approved, as companies had to demonstrate viability. And since the ATVM program favors re-tooling of older existing plants, Tesla will probably look at acquiring a closed factory from another company. Recent rumors had the company possibly getting a former McDonnell-Douglas factory in Long Beach, although there are plenty of other properties available. <br /><br />The current Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings at General Motors and Chrysler made those companies ineligible in the current round. It's not known if any announcements will be made about loans for battery makers like A123 or EnerDel. <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/">ABG Quick Drive: Ford Focus EV mule</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/1292136/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/focus-ev-1280-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/1292135/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/focus-ev-1280-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/1292138/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/focus-ev-1280-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/1292137/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/focus-ev-1280-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/abg-quick-drive-ford-focus-ev-mule/1292127/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/01/focus-ev-1280-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20090623/ANA02/306239975/1186">Automotive News</a>, sub. req'd]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/23/ford-nissan-tesla-all-big-winners-in-doe-advanced-technology-l/">Ford, Nissan, Tesla all big winners in DoE advanced technology loans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 23 Jun 2009 13:29:00 EST. While Ford has done an incredible job of optimizing the pony car's suspension, many still find it unacceptable that such an antiquated technology is used on a modern day performance car. <em>Motor Trend </em>boss Angus MacKenzie, however, says that the S197 Mustang platform almost received an independent rear suspension a while back - and for a lot less than you might think. <br /></p>
<p><br />According to MacKenzie, the 2005 Mustang was set to get an independent suspension shared with the BA-series Falcon sedan built in Australia. Even when it was decided that the two cars would use different platforms, Ford designers set about designing an independent suspension specific to the Mustang. So why did it still end up with a solid rear axle? According to MacKenzie, product development executive Phil Martens convinced Bill Ford Jr. that they could save $100 per car if they dropped the IRS and went with the solid axle. For all of you non drag-racing types that wish the Mustang had an independently suspended rear, this news probably makes you sick to the stomach. <br /></p>
<p>But wait... there's more! MacKenzie's sources say that the cost of sorting out the current Mustang's suspension actually cost $98 more per car than the IRS that could have gone in the car. Like Angus, we love the current Mustang but have to wonder if it could have been that much better.<br /></p>

<br />It is already illegal to manually use a cell phone for texting or calling while driving in New Jersey. A state legislator has aimed at the next in-car distraction: GPS devices. Democratic Assemblyman Harvey Smith wants a ban on manually programming GPS devices while driving. You would need to pull over to input your destination, or have a voice-operated unit. Punishment otherwise would be a $100 fine.<br /><br />Probably every single one of us has had to drive defensively around someone who was obviously not paying attention to their driving. At this point, the question in New Jersey is how many activities are they going to ban? And what makes a GPS unit worse than an MP3 player or those folks who drive with their knees while they eat?<br /><br />Another Assemblyman, John Wisniewski, had proposed a blanket ban on distracted driving in 2006 but that was passed over in favor of the cell phone-specific ban. New Jersey also already has a law against careless driving, which carries a $100 fine and two points on your license. Smith's proposed law would give New Jersey officers -- Smith is an undersheriff -- a specific behavior to target, but it all seems a bit scattershot in light of the copious distracting activities drivers engage in. <em>Hat tip to Rich!</em><br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/satellite-navigation-systems/">Satellite navigation systems</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/satellite-navigation-systems/2098285/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/various-gps-models-_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/satellite-navigation-systems/2098282/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/various-gps-models--(1)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/satellite-navigation-systems/2098286/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/various-gps-models--(2)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/satellite-navigation-systems/2098283/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/various-gps-models--(3)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/satellite-navigation-systems/2098284/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/various-gps-models--(4)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.dailyrecord.com/article/20090621/COMMUNITIES/906210333/1005">Daily Record</a> | Gallery Images: Getty]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/21/new-jersey-bill-aims-to-ban-drivers-use-of-gps-while-driving/">New Jersey bill aims to ban driver's use of GPS while driving</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 21 Jun 2009 12:04:00 EST. The lovable Simpson's dad wll provide instructions in the usual Homer prose, including the usual references to food and general stupidity. The TomTom website has samples of Homer's unique direction-giving style <a href="http://www.tomtom.com/page/simpsons">on their website</a>. <br /></div>
<br />Homer is just one of over 70 different celebrity voices that are available on the TomTom website, and you don't need to buy a special edition nav unit to experience it. Registered users of TomTom devices can purchase Homer's voice online for only $12.95, but you'll have to download TomTom HOME on your computer if you haven't already done so.<br /><br />We're guessing that there will be plenty of Simpson's fans that'll be more than happy to download Homer to their TomTom, but we're not sure how this will play out for the rest of us. After all, Homerisms are pretty damn funny, but when we hear the same things over and over again, the novelty wears out pretty quickly. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/16/woohoo-homer-simpsons-guidance-comes-to-tomtom/">Hit the jump</a> to view the press release.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.tomtom.com/page/simpsons">TomTom</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/17/woohoo-homer-simpsons-guidance-comes-to-tomtom/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Woohoo! Naturally, any given engine needs to make enough power for its intended application, but fuel efficiency is just as important in modern society. This being the case, it's not terribly surprising that Volkswagen's innovative 1.4-liter Twincharger engine has taken home top honors as the 2009 International Engine of the Year, beating out BMW's powerful 3.0-liter direct-injected twin-turbo six-cylinder powerplant by just four points. <br /><br />The Engie of the Year award is handed out based on the voting results of 65 motor scribes polled from all around the globe. Some 32 countries are represented in the jury, including the U.S., Germany, Japan, China, the U.K., and Korea.<br /><br />To go along with its Engine of the Year award, VW's supercharged and turbocharged mill also won the Green Engine of the Year trophy - beating out Honda's 1.3-liter IMA hybrid powertrain in the process - and also took the nod in its 1.0-1.4-liter size class. Here's a list of the rest of the award winners:<br />

<br />Now that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/16/officially-official-koenigsegg-reaches-agreement-to-buy-saab/">Koenigsegg's purchase of ailing fellow Swedish automaker Saab</a> is all but officially official, our attention naturally turns to the the current product lines and possible future vehicles from the two automakers. At least a few people are <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/16/koenigsegg-meet-saab-saab-meet-koenigsegg/">wondering out loud</a> if there's a possibility that Koenigsegg's involvement with Saab could bring the gorgeous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/02/28/video-and-live-shots-saab-aero-x-concept/">Aero X concept car from 2006</a> to life, but at least some of us are a bit more interested in reports that Koenigsegg's Quant from this year's <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/category/geneva-motor-show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> may see production via the use of some of Saab's leftover production capabilities.<br /><br />Powered by an electric motor at each wheel for a total of 512 hp and 527 lb-ft of turqoe, the Koenigsegg Quant concept featured a new kind of battery that is supposedly capable of providing a range of over 300 miles after a short 15-20 minutes charge. Futher, a set of solar panels on the Quant's exterior can reportedly keep accessories running without draining the main battery. If there's any truth to the rumors, we could see the Quant hit production in low volumes within the next few years.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/">NLV Quant by Koenigsegg</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/1405050/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/koeniggsegg-14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/1405049/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/koeniggsegg-15_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/1405048/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/koeniggsegg-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/1405047/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/koeniggsegg-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/photos/nlv-quant-by-koenigsegg-1/1405046/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/03/koeniggsegg-7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://blogs.edmunds.com/greencaradvisor/2009/06/report-512-hp-koenigsegg-quant-solar-electric-4-seater-to-enter-production.html">Green Car Advisor</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/17/report-koenigseggs-purchase-of-saab-may-bring-electric-quant-c/">Could Koenigsegg's purchase of Saab bring electric Quant concept to production?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 13:30:00 EST.
