We've reached the final prize of our week's worth of 2008 Autoblog Holiday Sweepstakes, and we think we've saved the best for last. The prize for Day 7 is a DashDAQ Series II valued at $549. If you're unfamiliar with DashDAQ and what this little box can do, let us enlighten you. The DashDAQ is an open-source, Linux-based computer for you car. Plug it into your OBD-II diagnostic port and the DashDAQ can display your car's vitals on its 4-inch color touchscreen in five ways: analog gauges, digital gauges, slider bars, graphs or a simulated dashboard. It can diagnose trouble codes; display your fuel economy in real time; record performance data like 0-60, braking and top speed; be a lap timer; measure horsepower and torque (taking a breath)... well, you get the point. There's not much this little box can't do, including playing all forms of media like movies and music. You can even add a GPS Navigation Bundle to turn the DashDAQ into exactly what it looks like, a portable navigation system. We've extended the entry period for this sweepstakes to noon EST on Friday, December 26th, so read below for instructions on how to enter to win this powerful in-car computer.

HOW TO ENTER:

Click above to view TomTom's full line of portable navigation systems

We suspect that one of the most popular gift this holiday season will be portable navigation systems. Their prices are plummeting and every day new features are being added to these magical maps-in-a-box. TomTom is arguably one of the biggest and best manufacturers of portable nav systems, so we're proud to be giving away a TomTom XL330·S on Day 6 of the 2008 Autoblog Holiday Sweepstakes.

The XL330·S features a 4.3-inch widescreen for easy viewing, an EasyPort mount that folds into the back of the unit, TomTom's Map Share technology that allows you to edit your own maps and incorporate the edits of other users and it's RDS-TMC traffic ready. Of course, TomTom has a full line of portable nav systems that range in price from $99.95 to $449.95, which is still about 1/4 the cost of an OEM nav system.
Click above to enlarge the winning designs for a 21st Century Routemaster bus

The New Bus for London competition has come to an end. Two proposals were chosen from the large group of entrants by a series of judges, and the winners have just been announced by London Mayor Boris Johnson. The Freight*Bus concept we took a look is nowhere to be found, but that's just fine. The two winners are excellent, and one of them comes from a familiar but unexpected source: Aston Martin. The mind reels with the infinite possibilities of an Aston Martin-designed London double-decker bus. With an all-glass roof complete with solar panels, the enviro-cred is present and accounted for, and the wooden floors and hop-on, hop-off accessibility add flair and practicality in equal doses.

The other winner comes via Capoco Design from Salisbury, UK. It's a more traditional design that keeps many of the old Routemaster's best bits but adds an eco-friendly drivetrain package. Both designs will now be submitted to bus manufacturers for review.

[Source: Transport for London]
Winners for 21st Century London bus contest include...
The holiday gifts keep on comin' courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Autoblog and partners such as Rob Ijbema. You may remember not too long ago that we featured Rob's website, Car-A-Day, on Autoblog. We were duly impressed with his ability to paint cars on a daily basis, and apparently so were you as more than a few Autoblog readers supported the artist's efforts by buying some of his work through the Car-A-Day website. As a thank you for the support and appreciation, Rob graciously donated one of his works as a prize for our 2008 Autoblog Holiday Sweepstakes.

Titled "A German affair at St. Petersburg", the painting depicts this past year's Acura Sports Car Challenge of St. Petersburg in which the Audi R10 #2 driven by Marco Werner and Lucas Luhr bested the Porsche RS Spyder piloted by Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas. Ijbema's painting style captures the movement and atmosphere perfectly, and believe me when I say it looks better in person. Read below for instructions on how to enter and keep an eye out early next week when the 2008 Autoblog Holiday Sweepstakes continues.

HOW TO ENTER:

Today's prizes for the 2008 Autoblog Holiday Sweepstakes are two CarMD handheld diagnostic tools. These useful little handheld scanners plug into your car's OBD-2 port (accessible on all 1996 and newer vehicles) and diagnose any problems that might be lurking underhood. They will tell you if your car's running fine, what service intervals have passed or if something isn't working properly and what it is. You can use CarMD to check out used cars before you buy, double check a mechanic's diagnosis and confirm your car is ready for that next road trip. Plus, you'll be able use included software from CarMD to find out exactly what those trouble codes mean, how to fix them and how much it might cost. Read the instructions below on how to enter to win your own CarMD handheld diagnostic tool.

How to Enter:

Today's prizes come courtesy of Spirit Level Films, which has a real treat in store for Autoblog readers. We're giving away copies of both C'était un Rendezvous and the Snake and the Stallion on DVD to five lucky Autoblog readers.

For those who don't know, C'était un Rendezvous is largely considered the best driving scene ever captured on film, with Jeremy Clarkson himself saying, "Makes Bullitt look like a cartoon." While only nine minutes long, the uninterrupted footage of director Claude Lelouch's lawless race through Paris is the most jaw-dropping driving scene you'll ever see on film. Thanks to Spirit Level Films, you can now watch the DVD legally on your livingroom's giant flatscreen rather than a little window on YouTube.

The Snake and the Stallion, meanwhile, is the most definitive documentary on how Carroll Shelby and his Cobras took on the mighty Enzo Ferrari in motorsport during the 1960s. Written, produced and directed by Richard Symons, the two-disc set also features original interviews with all the participants, footage of the original races and newly filmed reconstructions with the original cars (Ferrari GTO, 250 SWB, Cobras and Daytona Coupe) on the track. Check out trailers for both films after the jump and read the instructions below on how to enter.

BONUS: Spirit Level Films is offering £10 off the normal £24.99 price of the Snake and the Stallion just for Autoblog readers. Click here and enter coupon code AUTOBLOG01 for the reduced price of just £14.99 ($22.41 USD).

How to Enter:

It wouldn't be an Autoblog Holiday Sweepstakes without giving away something from Automoblox. This year we have the toy car company's newest and most exclusive model: the T9-SE Signature Series. The first truly limited edition Automoblox model, the T9-SE will be produced in a small run of only 2,000 units, and we have one to give away (NOTE: the actual prize will still be sealed in its original packaging). The T9-SE is based on the T9 pickup but features silver and red emblems, the signature of designer Patrick Calello himself, metallic black connectors, a painted pick-up bed and specially decorated people inside the cab. As regular readers of Autoblog know, we're big fans of these heirloom quality toy cars and many of us count ourselves as customers.
We begin our 2008 Autoblog Holiday Sweepstakes with a few items to bolster your library of auto-related books. All three come courtesy of Motorbooks, the world's leading publisher and distributor of enthusiast books. The first, Nissan GT-R: Legendary Performance, Engineering Marvel, is a coffee table book that chronicles the recent history of the Nissan GT-R from the R32 to today's R35. If you like looking at large, full color pictures of the world's hottest car, this one's for you. The second book is called Barris Cars of the Stars and pairs the famous custom car builder with his A-list clients, everyone from the Beach Boys to Barry White. Finally we have a curious little paperback called You Are What You Drive that features illustrations of particular models accompanied by clinical and comical examinations of what those vehicles say about their owners. All three would make great gifts for your auto-obsessed loved one, so read up on how to enter below. Also visit Motorbooks.com for more auto-related reading that would fit nicely in someone's stocking.

How to Enter:

Our six-part weekly series will take you behind the scenes with our new race partners, the "Tinkerbell Rosso" racing team and their 1996 Crown Victoria "Police Interceptor."
Now, the team is hard at work turning the former taxi/police interceptor into a race car. The madness begins after the jump.

Click above for high-res gallery of the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia

Looks like there won't be much of a fiesta for Ford this year, as the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia has captured the 2009 European Car of the Year award by just one point over the hot little hatch with the big blue oval on its snout. Scoring 321 points to the Fiesta's 320, the Insignia claimed the victory with the bronze going to the Volkswagen Golf (223 points). It's the first win for Opel in 22 years, although the European branch of GM has scored four runner-up spots in the past. You might even say this is payback for Ford, which snatched the top prize from Opel in 2007 when the Ford S-Max nipped the Corsa by two points in the balloting. According to the jurors, the Insignia won this year based on its "artistry with German precision" good looks, active and passive safety features, comfort and a wide array of efficient engines including that 280-hp turbo V6. Options such as the Opel Eye that reads road signals, FlexRide suspension and nine-mode Adaptive Forward Lighting were also cited. Hopefully this car will eventually show up Stateside as the next Saturn Aura. Thanks for the tip, everyone!

Gallery: Opel / Vauxhall Insignia

[Source: Car of the Year]
Opel/Vauxhall Insignia wins European Car of the Year by single point originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 12:35:00 EST.
Click above to view high-res gallery of the 2011 Chevy Volt

Now that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has an agreement with General Motors regarding how to measure the fuel mileage of the 2011 Chevy Volt, our attention turns to the EPA, which now has to decide what official mileage rating will appear on the new car's window sticker and how to determine what that number will be. The first recommendation comes from the Automotive X-Prize, the foundation of which will award $10 million from Progressive Insurance to the winner of its competition to design a production-viable car that people would want to drive that gets 100 MPGe or more.

What's with that little 'e' after the familiar miles per gallon? Basically, the X-Prize crew wants to convert all units of energy to a figure that's equivalent to the power from a gallon of gas. That way, a car's powerplant - regardless of where it gets that energy from - earns a rating that can be easily compared with everything else. So, EPA, the ball's in your court... still.

Psst - GM, maybe you should enter the Volt in the X-Prize competition. Just a thought.

Gallery: 2011 Chevy Volt - Live Reveal

[Source: Automotive X-Prize via AutoblogGreen]
Continue reading Automotive X-Prize recommends EPA adopt MGEe rating

Automotive X-Prize recommends EPA adopt MGEe rating originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Sep 2008 18:25:00 EST. Ford and Filmaka.com are teaming up on a contest to see who can create the best Mustang-themed script. Would-be filmmakers can choose from one of eight Mustang stories or pick a tale of their own, then write a script about it. The people with the top 20 scripts as chosen by Ford and Filmaka.com will get a budget of $5,000 to produce their film, along with contacts at local Mustang clubs for the use of vehicles to shoot. Those 20 winners will have two weeks to submit their finished work, and nine winners and an alternate will receive an additional $5,000 in prize money. The top 10 will also get the chance to create a promo that will appear on network TV. The grand prize winner gets the opportunity to direct a film for promotional materials for the 2010 Mustang.

That's a pretty cool contest for aspiring filmmakers everywhere, but there isn't much time at all to get in on the fun. The contest ends on August 26 (today!), and the top 20 winners will need to have their initial work completed by September 16.

Gallery: 2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt

[Source: Ford]
Ford seeking directors for Mustang movies originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 07:59:00 EST. The loyal owners were participating in Scion's "United by Individuality" brand campaign, designed to put individuals' modified vehicles in magazines, on billboards, even projected onto movie screens. More than 300 cars made the cut, and they soon found themselves in the Nevada desert for a photo shoot that included racing, tuning events, and even music performances. Shown above is a stunning aerial shot of more than 200 cars parked - very well we might add - at the event. The ad campaign launches in movie theaters July 21, while the other media won't go live until August 4th.

Since then, gas prices have shot through the roof and fighting climate change has become a favorite global pastime. Seeing that his SUV gets about 13 mpg, Ryan doesn't want to drive it, doesn't want to sell it and doesn't want anyone else to get behind the wheel -- ever. Trouble is, he's not quite sure how to go about it just yet. So, he wants you to help him decide the fate of his SUV. A few initial ideas: catapult it into the Pacific Ocean, blow it up or convert it to a run on either electrons or biodiesel.

We're hoping that common sense wins out here and the vehicle is somehow saved from such an inauspicious fate as being merely blown to shreds -- after all, that's not very eco-friendly either. While a biodiesel conversion might be fun, we'll put our official vote on the EV idea. Yank the engine, drop in a nice electric motor and some decent batteries in the rear cargo area... presto-chango, problem solved. Well, maybe it's a bit more complicated than that. Watch Ryan's video after the break. Thanks for the tip, everyone!

[Source: One Fewer]
The fate of a Range Rover is in your hands, people originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Jul 2008 19:27:00 EST.
Spend a couple of minutes surfing the net and you'll find all sorts of contests giving away all sorts of prizes. The best of them - ahem, like the Autoblog Relaunch Celebration Sweepstakes we ran a year back - give away a new car. But how about an old car? We mean, like a classic... a classic among classics, even, like the 1957 Ford Thunderbird.

That's exactly what Blaster chemicals - makers of a variety of lubricants and rust inhibitors - is giving away to mark its 50th anniversary. Residents of the lower 48 can enter the sweepstakes online until the end of July. The grand prize consists of the T-Bird and a trip for two to Cleveland - home of Rock & Roll and our own John Neff - to pick it up at the awards ceremony. They're also giving away five classic pedal cars, five leather jackets and Blaster-branded apparel. Follow the jump to enter.

What we're giving away today is technically courtesy of Sony Computer Entertainment America, but in reality this unopened copy of GT5 Prologue and Dualshock 3 controller are really my birthday presents that arrived a bit too late, so happy birthday (and Father's Day) to you instead. They are today's prizes for our Father's Day Sweepstakes, Day 4, and one lucky winner will get both. Unfortunately a Sony Playstation 3 is not part of the prize package, but what better reason is there for getting one than winning this sweepstakes?

All you need to do to enter is...
Not much, so we rang Patrick Calello, the designer who dreams up these heirloom-quality toys, and he's graciously provided both a C9R sportscar ($39.99) and S9R sports sedan ($39.99) for us to give away. Unlike the last two days, both prizes will be going to one winner to help them start their collection of Automoblox cars. I have six myself, and the out-of-the-box C9R you see above is mine. The prizes for this sweepstakes, however, are still in their original boxes and unopened. We're also including an Automoblox T-shirt and decals courtesy of Patrick Calello with the prize.

All you need to do to enter is...
